People are interesting. Down here in Destin, Florida I'll run into men and women from all over the United States. There are scads of Canadians; mostly from around the Toronto area. One of the best of times is when I go to the driving range. Last week a fella next to me was hitting balls . He was the general manager of a golf course and the only hotel in Cooperstown, New York. Unless you've been living in a basement your entire life Cooperstown is the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. My family visited Cooperstown twenty years ago. It's just as you would guess; a quaint New England village with s beatiful lake in the center of town. Can you guess his name? I can't either because thirty seconds after he introduced himself I had forgotten it. Then there were three men from Vermont who let me join their threesome.
I've decided there's one thing all men have in common when on the golf course: regardless if you're from Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Vermont or Ontario the F word us pretty much universal. There's nothing like the F word to achieve total camaraderie among men. Now I'm think they may even say it in France.

About ten years ago I attended an industrial convention as a part of my job. It was in downtown Columbus, Ohio and after entering the pavilion I had to register. At one of the booths was a hot looking babe so obviously I gravitated toward where she was sitting. I was standing in line waiting to be signed in and I noticed she had an ID with her hometown on a badge lying off to the side. It happened to be a burg community in Manitoba. There was also a large Canadian map directly behind her with her province, the county and her hometown. As long as a person isn't hurtful it's okay to play with people's minds isn't it? That's what I always tell myself. When it was my turn to fill out the forms she asked me a question. I mentioned that she must be from Manitoba. "How did you know that", she said? "I'm a territorial linguist and I've been brought in as a speaker to help salesmen adapt to their customers by learning the nuances of local dialects", I answered. A person would have to be more than eccentric to come up with this explanation so I guess that explains me. At any rate, I told her it was easy to tell she was from Manitoba. I got the normal "Oohs and Aahs". Then I said I could do one better than that. I proceeded to tell her what county she lived in and I topped off the ice cream Sunday with this cherry. "And your hometown is so and so". And do you know what I did next? I picked her jaw up off the floor and walked away. No harm, no foul.
Yesterday I played the Links golf course in Miramar Beach. It's a scenic 18 holes that wraps around the Whatchahatchee Bay. On the 9th, a par 5, I was waiting to hit my second shot. My ball was twenty feet from the water so I walked over to side of the fairway and looked down at the crystal clear site. . There were, at the very least, five dozen balls below the surface and ten feet from shore. My heart began to pound. "It wouldn't take much to remove my pants and jump in", I thought. "I wonder if the lady in our group would mind"? I doubt she would have said anything but her husband might have so I tucked that thought away for later reference. Maybe I could sneak out just before sunset. It was at that very point in time I counted eight jellyfish floating aimlessly near the white, circular treasures. If you've never seen one they're shaped like a bell, whitish in color; almost transparent, with small tentacles. These were about eight inches in length with a circumference of the same. Their life consists of bobbing in the sea, their movements subjected only to currents and high winds. They do nothing except eat; no pressures, no chores, no obligations. They ARE my new heroes.
Lizzie's on a health kick. When were arrived here she thought she was looking like a sack of potatoes. When I'm on vacation, which is everyday, if I thought I looked like a 5 lb. bag of Russets I'd buy a 10 lb. bag. Lizzie began to work out on the treadmill then after this she takes a four mile walk. She's also cut out snacks and eats salads. The poor girl is demented. And this is what has surprised me most. She's dropped weight whereby she has no waist. What do they call it? Oh yeah, an hour glass figure. Maybe tomorrow I'll begin her regimen---but I doubt it. Besides, it'll be Saturday. That's one of my days of rest.

Some people go to great lengths to insure their safety. You have to give Sheyla Hershey credit for looking ahead to make certain her 'personal assets' kept her out of harms way. On the way home from a Super Bowl party Ms. Hershey ran her car into a tree. You are probably surprised to learn this young mother was charged with drunken driving. Luckily for her she had built-in twins in the car that protected her from serious injury. If you happen to live in the Houston area it would behoove you to check up on Sheyla to make sure she's recuperating properly. Send her a get well card. It's possible she may get back to you.

P.S. Why do I have this nagging feeling that somewhere down the road this post will be one of the most viewed?

Since we're all into insensitivity in our speech I was wondering when it kicks in. For instance, is there a time period in history when it's acceptable to utter a word or phrase before we get a whoopin' or sent to the woodshed? Let's say it's 1370 AD in Europe. That's twenty years after the Great Bubonic Plague. A bunch of peasants or even knights and knaves are sitting around telling jokes and one guy says, "How can you tell if a King survived the Black Death"? The answer would be, "He has more warts on his nose than a frog". Ha Ha.
Then, all of a sudden, some guy drinking ale starts crying because his wife died of the plague. Talk about insensitivity.

Last Sunday The Queen and I went to a Super Bowl party involving three other couples. Two of the men were football fanatics, two didn't care(me included) and the wives wanted to see the ever aging Madonna perform her fluff. In addition to this we had to have a gambling pool. I hate these but only because I never win. I might as well put my money out in the street and let a convicted cocaine addict pick it up. The pool we had involved putting your initials on a sheet of paper then into a box. Every time there was a score an initial was drawn and that person won. I'll cut to the chase now so as to not hold you in suspense. I lost $50 which means the addict did, too.
What struck me as funny, no wait, hilarious was one of the ladies said something extremely out of character. She's a dear friend of ours and is around 72 years old. She's married to a guy who I've know since 1956 except he's seven years older than I. His brother was and is one of my dearest friends. In those days he used to make fun of us just because he could. Back to his wife, this Christian woman. She was counting the name initials then had to make a selection between two of them so she said, "Eenie, meenie, miny mo, catch a---------------okay, you can fill it in. I had not heard a person do this little ditty since the 50's. I was incredulous but at the same time started laughing because who would think anyone would do this especially an older doll. Yeah, it was insensitive but it was funny and I knew Al Sharpton wasn't in the room to cobble things up.

I don't mean to be disrespectful but I can find ways to make people think I'm a horrid person if they heard me. I can be fairly irreverent when I want to be. Two years ago I weighed in at 228 lbs. I hate when that happens. Lizzie couldn't go to the Minnesota lake place with me so I trekked up there by myself. As soon as I arrived I jumped on the bathroom scale but only to see if the 16 hour drive allowed me to drop a few ounces. It hadn't. For thirty days I consumed a milk shake for breakfast, one for lunch and two baked potatoes with onions and catsup for dinner. At the end of this period and back home in Dublin, Ohio people who saw me asked, "how did you lose those twenty-eight pounds"? "Easy" I said, "I went on the Auschwitz diet" aka starvation. There's only one reason I can get away with this. Most all the concentration camp folks and their relatives have gone to meet their Maker. Insensitivity? You be the judge. Chances are pretty good, though, I wouldn't say this in front of someone named Liebowitz.

If you don't golf you may not understand this next example. When swinging the club it's important to have a big arc. It keeps everything in sync and allows for more power. Tuck the previous sentence into your thinking cap. It'll be back in a moment.
In the 1950's there was introduced on the market a drug to help pregnant moms have an easier nine months. The drug was called Thalidomide. After awhile, though, when the children were born there was a serious problem. Some came out of the womb without arms or legs; only hands and feet attached to their torso. I'm not sure how many there were since I never saw one up close.
About ten years ago I was on the golf course with my doctor buddy and made one of those handsy swings, the one without a big arc. Understand I'm a basket case on the course; always tinkering and fidgeting. I took one of those patented turd swings and the ball went forward at least four feet. I looked at my buddy and said, "that's what I call my thalidomide swing". He started laughing and I realized I'd made up a creative and funny joke---unless---a parent of a thalidomide baby was playing in our group. That would be a slight percentage because they would have been eighty years old and upwards of that. Chances are good there weren't too many of these kids on the golf course unless they saw me and decided to take up the game. Hey, if I can do it then they can, too. It wasn't until last year I heard the actual term for this swing. It's called alligator arms. That's more politically correct than mine. Truth be told, I was golfing with a fella from Alabama last week; had never met him before and I took one of my patented swings and yelled out, "Damned thalidomide swing" and he started laughing out loud. Anyone over sixty can appreciate it. The parent's of these kids have gone onto the great beyond and, as I said, the poor kids probably don't play anything with a golf club but putt-putt golf.
It's possible to come up with hundreds of these examples if a guy or gal put their minds to it.
Maybe the point of this blog is, time does heal all wounds, or it could be that I'm a very insensitive person. Or both.

During the last presidential election, Catholics voted by a margin of 55-45% for the most pro-death President in history. Of course, he started out by covering up the crucifix at Georgetown before delivering a speech, so as not to offend Muslims or Atheists, proceeded to declare that “America is not a Christian nation,”, then bowed before a Saudi king. Therefore, should we be surprised when this secular humanist, pro-abortion President now attacks religious freedom by backing regulations which force Catholic hospitals—against their will and the tenets of their religion—to fund and or even perform abortions or risk sanctions and closure?
Before it is too late and we re-elect the most pro-abortion politician ever to hit Washington, perhaps we should revisit Obama “family values.”

The U.S. Treasury Department boosted its estimate of government losses in the $85 billion auto bailout by $170 million.
In the government’s latest report to Congress this month, the Treasury upped its estimate to $23.77 billion, up from $23.6 billion.
Last fall, the government dramatically boosted its forecast of losses on the rescues of General Motors Co., Chrysler Group LLC and their finance units from $14 billion to $23.6 billion.
Much of the increase in losses is due to the sharp decline of GM’s stock price over the last six months.
GM closed Monday at $24.23, down 0.6 percent. It’s down 35 percent over its 52-week-high of $37.23, but the Detroit automaker has rebounded from a low set last year of $19.05. The government’s most recent cost estimate is based on GM’s closing price of $21.29 as of Nov. 30.

A Simple Statement On What The White House Is Saying About Healthcare And The Catholic Church

The best way to understand how the Obama administration's recent edit on it's war on the Catholic Church came from a New York congresswoman and quoted in the Daily Caller:

“This is the government saying, ‘Set your beliefs aside, and we know what is best for you,’” she added. “It has a chilling effect on all religions. It’s an overreach of the federal government. And it’s a dangerous precedent.”

In reality, it could apply to non-religious groups: agnostics and atheists included if the government so desired. Maybe you've heard other examples. What if citizens were required to eat pork. I know it's a silly statement but if this was mandatory, say, for health reasons, would not our Jewish and Muslim friends be offended?
Then there'd be serious hell to pay.

Dear Diary

Egad! I've become exactly what I feared most, a bonafide Florida senior citizen. Everything runs on a schedule; like a train leaving the depot. Lizzie and I find ourselves going to bed, tired or not, at 9:30. We're now in the central time zone but it's SOP that we hit the hay on eastern time so we don't mess up our systems when we return to Ohio. I roust myself out of bed at 7:30 am; Lizzie and hour earlier. She watches, ick!, the Today Show. I'm on the computer immediatly after performing the morning chores. One hour later it's down to the work out room. Sometimes I don't do anything but watch TV. On other occasions I might lift a weight or two and could possibly jump up on the treadmill----or not. After this faux attempt at exercising Lizzie and I hook up and walk alternate Hwy. 98. There's no traffic, it parallels the Gulf and the sidewalk is filled with older folks 'shuffling' along. Know what I hate most about this trek? We'll pass fifty people and it's mandatory for everyone to say, "Good-morning", every damned time. That's too many words for me so I utter, "Howdy" but sometimes grunt, "Hi" or "Uh". Seems as though when it's after noon people don't say anything.
Our busy part of our day is noon to three pm. There's grocery shopping. We do our buying for one day only. It's like older folks not buying the green bananas joke. The chain grocery stores are Winn-Dixie and Publix. WD is too expensive. They charge at least 1 cent more for an orange than Publix. I've noticed that Lizzie and I do this: we'll pick up an orange and inspect it very closely. It might be that we do it because it's a time killer or because we're damned particular about what goes in our bodies or both. And Publix has a better array of post cards for our grandchildren and the price is right, too.
After this it's off to The Dollar Store. Whooee! Talk about bargains galore. They have items we won't use ever but they're so inexpensive it's impossible to pass them up.
At 2pm on the local TV channel we can watch The Closer----every day. Afterward, it's two episodes of the original Law & Order. Life doesn't get any better than this. Now that it's dinner time(don't laugh--it's 6pm in Ohio) we either have today's Publix fare or head out to the discount restaurant with coupon in hand.
That's it! Our week days are completed.
Week-ends are another story. If you've ever visited Wright-Patterson Air Museum in Dayton, Ohio you have to admit it was very inspiring. Well, the same can be said for The Pensacola Air and Naval Museum. I never thought I'd visit anything to rival WP but we did. For us, the week-ends are for day trips and Pensacola is well worth the hour drive. Did you know that at the very end of Pensacola Beach Key is a fort called Ft. Pickens? You do now. It was built in 1834 by slave labor from New Orleans. It's massive. The government sent the Indian 'renegade', Geronimo, to Ft. Pickens after his justified insurrection. Ft. Pickens is a highlight and so very fascinating especially when the tour guides are free. That's another aspect of being a senior; seeking out things that are free. The Pensacola museum is free but sometimes you'll be walking around and see a guide who has been hired by a group. These people go into more detail. You can't imagine how easy it is to mingle in just as though a fee had been paid. I did this at the Palace of Versailles in France and it worked to perfection.
Next week-end we're off to Seaside, Florida. It's only fifteen minutes from our condo. It's a quaint little community that has a food flea market every Saturday. It's also where the movie, The Truman Show, was filmed. The last time we went I got away without spending so much as a dollar. Admission to everything was the price of my eyesight. That's pretty much a constant statement for us old goats on the 'Redneck Riviera' of Destin; how much did it cost?
This is the wisdom I am imparting for the day : "If if costs something find an alternative activity unless you can work a scam". It's what old people are expected to do.

Our friends invited us over to watch the game and the wife of was super excited to see her perform. Then, when it was over she said, "well, that wasn't very good". My question is, why is it necessary to have contemporary type singers, the ones with scads of background dances and music that is louder than that of the main singer? Would it be so horrible to have a Shania Twain or a Michael Buble'? Heck, I'd even go for a guy who is a no-name singer of Frank Sinatra tunes.
Please understand, I have never been a Madonnna fan so right away I had more important things to do last night. I took the opportunity to clip and file my nails while she was on.

George Will: Historians Will Marvel At Liberals Defense Of Abortion"

On Sunday’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos,” Washington Post columnist George Will said that last week’s decision — and subsequent reversal — by the Susan G. Komen Foundation to take funding away from Planned Parenthood was strictly about abortion and less about women’s health, adding that the case illustrates how far liberals are willing to take the fight to defend abortion.

“This is not about women’s health. This is about providing 300,000 abortions a year. Planned Parenthood cleverly cast this saying, ‘We are in the mammogram business.’ They’re not in the mammogram business — they are in the referral of mammograms. This showed two extraordinary things, George(Stephanoupolos). First, the American left cares about ending wars and they care about poverty and they care about the environment, but they really care about — when they’re not perfunctory — is when you touch abortions. And historians will marvel that American liberalism in the first part of the 21st century is defined as defense of abortion.”
Will added that there was a degree of hypocrisy in that the Obama administration has chosen to take the “choice” away from Catholic institutions pertaining to providing contraception.
“Second, all these people describing themselves as pro-choice said it is illegitimate to choose not to be involved in abortion. And a much more important decision politically that was taken this week was the Obama administration saying that Catholic institutions have no choice — and this was applauded by pro-choice people — have no choice but to provide contraception, abortion-inducing drugs and sterilization.

Obama-ites Losing Christians & Military In Droves

Last week Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan lashed out at the Obama Administration for forcing religious organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience. New Obama regulations will force Christian organizations to provide free contraceptives, sterilizations and abortion drugs to workers even though this violates Catholic Church teaching. The new rules are so strict that most Catholic institutions will not qualify for an exemption.

This week the military is telling Catholic Chaplains what they can and cannot say about the Obama Administration. These are just the latest examples of Obama's war on Christians.

Except for Big Labor, communists. academia, Hollywood types and Occupy Wall Street folks, I can't think of too many groups this clown and his clownites haven't offended.

The Council Bluffs Cowboy sent me a 'combined rendition' of the song, Stand by Me. It is unique in that it was done mostly by street people from around the world. Lawdy, lawdy it's embarrassing living in the 21st century with all these new fangled gadgets and technology. I do believe it's the reason God set our life expectancy rates so the next generation can handle future inventions with ease while us old-timers fade into the sunset. True story. A month ago I visited the Dublin Public Library due to my computer contracting a virus. So, I sauntered in and sat down at a row of six computers. I thought it was strange and kind of funny there were five year olds sitting next to me looking at mini screens. They were all playing games and I was clueless as to how they worked--as if I wanted to. One of the toothless kindergartners kiddies pointed to the 'big people' computers and said, "You belong over there", so off I went. I may have hears giggling but I'm not sure.
Lizzie and I were driving to Springfield, Ohio to see the grandkids a month ago and she was fiddling with my cell phone when she said, "you have text messages". "Egg on my face", I thought. I had no idea about a text and if I did I couldn't have figured out how to open it so she did it for me. I told her to erase them so after she had done this to 37 of the 97 messages she told me her fingers were tired and would finish later. Later happened to be three days ago when all of a sudden she yelled at me, "You've got porn pictures on this phone"! There were two pictures which I wasn't allowed to see and then I got blamed because I happened to know people(men) who sent porn. What is it with women? Every man I know, some time in his life, has sent out sexually suggestive jokes or pictures but I got the blame because I knew them. I have a priest friend who sends sexually suggestive jokes. An elder in a church does the same. I do know the photo's came from 989 area code which is in Michigan so I can sort of put my finger on who sent it except I haven't talked with him for four years. I guess if a person has to send out porn time stands still when men are men.
Last night I figured out how to get at the text messages still in my phone vault. I had four from 2010 asking me if I wanted to go golfing and/or fishing. My stock broker sent me one showing his new boat and another of his granddaughter holding a shot gun she won at some event. In addition, he had fourteen other texts dating back two years. What a shocker if I'd have received a text from the lottery commission saying I had twenty-four hours to pick up my million dollars; six months ago.
After these adventures a normal person would think that texting would become an integral part of my life from this day forward. But you'd be wrong if you said in the affirmative. I could care less. Besides, by the time I figured out how to do it I'd be dead which is the way God meant it to be.

We drove over to Seaside yesterday. It's a twenty minute drive from our condo and is a quaint community. The film starring Jim Carrey, Laura Linney and Ed Harris called, The Truman Show, was filmed in it. Every Saturday folks bring their goods to the town square to be sold. There are art shops aplenty and a book store that has an author available for a signing every Saturday. I had a brief chat with this week's authoress and have to admit I can't remember her name. I do know this. She's from Atlanta, worked for Gannett, has red hair, has been compared to Erma Bombeck and is slightly overweight for around fifty-five. If you know the person let me know. I might buy her book---or not.
It must cost bucket loads of money to live at Seaside but why would a person want to? Think about being in a cage at the zoo; folks walking around your street gawking and dropping candy wrappers on your sidewalk. The side streets are very small and the homes have the names of the owners and their home town on the front; like they're special or something. This is the off season so the homes were vacant for the most part.
We were only at Seaside for two hours. It was okay; got me away from television for awhile and I didn't spend any money, either.

"Fear Factor" producers' plans to serve fresh glasses of donkey semen to contestants on the next episode had NBC execs so concerned ... they gave serious thought to killing the stunt, TMZ has learned.
Sources involved in the production tell us the stomach-churning stunt was shot last summer.
We're told the challenge involved teams of twins drinking the full glass of donkey semen -- with a glass of urine thrown in for good measure. Contestants had to drain both glasses in order to move on to the next round. TMZ(if you can believe them) say that some contestants followed through on the challenge.

Our sources say NBC execs had multiple pow-wows in the months after the stunt was shot ... but eventually gave FF producers the thumbs up.
Calls to NBC were not immediately returned.

It's only taken three years but today is the big day. Yours truly signed up for a writing class through a continuing education class. It's called, "Memoirs for Memories". Seems to me I could have come up with a better one, "Take Their Money And Run" sounds good. Anyway, there are fourteen folks signed up for the class. The way I figure it'll be thirteen old dames and moi. Geesh! Fears abound thinking about it. I've been around these 'old bags' before; talk, talk, talk----yap, yap, yap. I'd be forced to listen to stories about raising children and buying clothes and jewelry and, 'Oh MY Gosh'--knitting for grandchildren. But I'm projecting, aren't I?
In case you've never guessed, I have never had writing instruction. Nope, it's true. In writing, even though I veer away from it, I try to have only two rules of thumb: (1) pretend I'm telling a story to a group of people and (2) avoid getting wordy. If I can get the point across using four words instead of fourteen then do it.
One of my dear friends from Spring, Texas or is it The Woodlands wants us to join forces? Anyway, he wants to collaborate on a book about growing up in the old homestead of Boone, Iowa. A different set of eyes, dontcha' know. There have been a couple of books written about our hometown. So far, none have made it on the NY Times best seller list. unlike the others ours would be funny and interesting and full of juicy gossip.
In a few minutes I'll take off for the college. It's located in Niceville, Florida so what could go wrong? I'll anxiously await the professor's take on what I put on pen and paper. If she thinks I have no talent then that's okay. I'm sure she won't put it in those words but I can take constructive criticism. Besides, I've been in a position before when I've had to tell more than one person to 'shove it up their ---'!

It's been a struggle but since we've been in Florida I've gotten away from the political game. In the past two weeks the talk radio station out of Ft. Walton Beach has remained silent. When we watch television we get the normal political ads, more so than at other times because the Florida Primary takes place next week. It's sinful the way the Republicans are destroying each other.
I've vacillated about candidates for over two years. My first choice and he remains so today is Sen. John Thune from South Dakota. Sadly, it ain't gonna to happen. Then when the field was set Michelle Bachmann was my choice. She's gone too so what's wrong with my choices?
Anyway, it's down to Newt and Romney. For awhile I thought Newt would make shambles of Obama and stand the best chance of defeating him. In the past few days, and it's my opinion only, I'm 1000% wrong. The only positive Gingrich has going for him is that Republicans would like to see him as the candidate who could destroy Obama in a debate. I find it best, when thinking of who I would want to be president to put it on a personal level. Romney reminds me of my father-in-law. He's business-like and professional. He knows how to run businesses. Question? I can't recall hearing from a Romney employee that he's a no good bum. Can you? He has absolutely no marital baggage. He's a family man. Being a family man is the most important job a fella can do. It's more important than how much money a person makes or how many Boards of Directors they sit on. Romney's thoughts are measured and he seemingly treats people around him as like they are significant. My boss was this way. He figured if his salesmen did well then he would do well so he gave us the leeway to be successful without dominating our lives and thought processes. My boss didn't want to be the center of the universe. Lord knows the guy in office right now is this way and how are you liking that? To me Newt and Obama would be one and the same when it comes to universal egos.
Newt reminds me of a dysfunctional parent. They may have done good deeds and been successful. They may be brilliant. Newt is brilliant. But, when I walk in the front door of my home at night I want to know what to expect from my parent. I don't want to have to worry if they're drunk or angry or out of control. With Newt I'll always wonder what he's going to do next. I don't want a President who has his people asking, "What the hell is going on here"? With Newt my fear is that's the way it would be.

365 Days Is Like a Heart Beat

Tomorrow when I awaken there's a strong possibility three numbers will be staring me in the face: 666, 99 or 66. It all depends on my attitude toward life. Since I'm about to endure another birthday I could either feel like hell or aged beyond belief or just accept the fact that another year has flown by and I'm 66.
It seems to me that 65 was one of those celebratory years. Twenty-nine was that way as was thirty. For me, thirty-five was significant since that's considered middle aged. Everybody dreads forty. Not me. I thought that maybe, just maybe, when I turned that age I might have matured into adulthood. In retrospect I didn't.
As I look back the fiftieth birthday and what occurred in the following ten years was the very best life has to offer; kids are gone, there's a little extra cash and the body is still limber enough to genuflect at Mass without having to have help in getting back up. I haven't given sixty-six a whole lot of thought. I think it's because it's all downhill from here. Instead of reflecting on birthdays I've been thinking about growing up and the fears I faced and how they've actually turned out to be irrelevant. Between the ages of five and ten my greatest fear was whether or not I'd be able to watch Capt. Kangaroo, Tom Terrific and Bullwinkle for the rest of my life or would I grow tired of cartoons. "How could anyone in their right mind not like cartoons", I'd ask myself.
From ten to fifteen, since sports was the be all end all my only thought was would I make the team or be on the Little League and Babe Ruth All-Star teams. The All-Star team was an ultra big deal especially when one came from Boone, Iowa. I once had a man tell me I might be the best Little Leaguer to ever come out of the town. Isn't that something special to hang my hat on?
In high school my desire to be a good student, for some reason, went flying out the door. I'd lost the 'get good grades' fear I had in my first eight years at Sacred Heart. In high school I earned the normal B's and C's with a smattering of D's and A's. Once, I received an F in Mr. Saunders geometry class. My report card showed the letter in red. So I took a red pen and made it a B. I bought myself nine weeks of glory before the next card came out. High school fears? Does anyone in their right mind have them? You didn't have to worry about a girlfriend because even before you asked a girl on a date you've peppered her friends with questions. "Does she like me'? "Will she go to the Prom with me"? "I like her". "Are you sure she likes me"? By the time you do get the courage to call her on the phone it's almost like you've been going steady for two months. Nobody would take a chance on asking a girl out if you weren't sure she liked you.
On to college. Most of you who came out of high school and did go to college had the normal fears. Will I do well? What about grad school? All of that stuff that prepares a certain scholar for the future. Do you know what my greatest fear was in college? I was extremely fearful there was going to be a party going on that I didn't know about(I borrowed this line because it's funny). There was a pub across the street from Coe College called the East Side Maid-Rite. When I left school in '68 the owners placed a plaque over the bathroom toilet and it read: MJ Hawkeye, Most Career Pukes, 1965-68.
Then after I matriculated(nice word for a Phy. Ed. Major) I found a job, got married, raised children and placed myself into the daily humdrum of a career. Those thirty-nine years flew by faster than a sparrow flitting from one apple tree to another.
This brings me to today. I have no fears. Every once in awhile I'll think about death and dying and guess what? It's not on my radar. It's a part of life and I'm ready for it. A couple of months ago I had a biopsy. I acted like I was fearful but in reality I told myself, "If it is, it is". It wasn't. I read an article in the UK Daily last week about scientists who have invented a pill that makes mice stop aging. That would be a good pill to use when I was twenty-five. Can you imagine being eighty, then taking a non-aging pill. I'd be in a wheel chair with my head on my chest and spittle from my broth and crackers running down my cheek---for possibly two hundred years. If I could still hear, which I can hardly do today, my kids would come visit and ask the question thinking I was stone deaf; "WHAT'RE WE GOING TO DO WITH GRANDPA"? Not a good way to be.
Anyway, happy birthday to me. I'll celebrate with Lizzie. We might even go to one of those early bird specials they have in Florida and have a slice or two of key lime pie.

I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. If it wasn't so funny it'd be sad. What percentage of their income did Romney, Obama and Biden give to charity? Obviously, because some make more than others the dollar amount will be different.
Mitt Romney gave 14% based on a 2010 tax return; about 2.9 million dollars. Obama gave 6.1% when he had to show his 2008 return, around 60 grand. Between 2000 and 2004 Obama and the wife made a little over 1 million dollars; not bad for a community organizer. Of this they gave 10 thousand to charity. And what about Joe Biden? Well, he didn't give a percent. He and doctor wife, Jill, totaled $380.00. What is it with these democrats who have no compunction about taking our money but feel put upon to do the same.

Awhile back I put a post on the site that has been the most popular in our three year history. Well, today, just for yucks I revisited my charts. Still in first place is the photo of the young Israeli girl with a skimpy top being compared to Hamas women dressed as shadows. We have new second and third place entrants. Formerly in second was the red headed 6'2" Aussie stylishly outfitted in a bikini. She is nowhere to be found. Her place was taken by the Indian actress dubbed the most beautiful woman in the world. And, in third place, the man who does the Dos Equis beer commercials. You know him by his closing comment: "Stay thirsty, my friends". What does this say about my writing? It's obvious, isn't it? The people who most visit this site are interested in two things; boobs and beer. I have to believe that it is true that we are known by the company we keep.
